This compact box would have been ideal for playing the game on the go. Gilt initials 'M. E. H. de B.' to the front board, being M. E. H. de Bruyne. Bridge, as it is played now, was evolved from the game of whist in the nineteenth century, the first rule book for the game being published in 1886. The modern game of contract bridge developed partly due to innovations of Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, a champion player of the illustratious family. CONDITION In a full morocco clamshell case. Externally, smart, with very light rubbing to the joints, and one small mark to the tail of the rear board. The pouch has a few light marks. The one-hundred and four playing cards are bright and clean.
