Description
A 3 volume set of antique books from Flavius Josephus printed in the 1700s on Jewish Antiquities. The volumes are the collected works of Flavius Josephus as translated into English by Sir Roger L'Estrange. Volume 3 has the title page dated 1775 and printed by Hodge and Shober in New York. Each book is in the original leather binding and conditions/notes will be listed below by volume. Volume 1: The first 12 pages of this book are missing. The book starts with "The Life of Flavius Joseph" before going into Jewish Antiquities and up to "Book 7". Bookplate on the inside front panel titled "Library of 'The Union'". Original endpaper is missing and there is a partially torn bookplate from a previous owner. There is heavy scuffing on the panels, edges and corners. Cracking on the leather of the spine. Page edges and internals are heavily toned. Some pages have holes indicative of former bookworm residents. Rear endpapers missing. the last present page has some tearing/chipping towards the bottom but the "End of the First Volume" is present and legible. Page # 520 Item Dimensions: 8"x 5"x 1.62" Book 2: The first 10 pages of this book are missing. The book starts where volume 1 left off with "Book 8". Scuffing on the front and rear panels. Shelfwear on the edges and rounded corners. Title on the spine is present but starting to flake off. Cracking of the leather on the spine. Page edges and internals are heavily toned. Library of 'The Union' Bookplate is present on the inside front panel. Original endpapers are missing. Previous owner signature stamped on the inside front panel. Rear endpapers missing. The book ends with Book 15 and a notation that it is the end of the second volume. Pages # 502 Item Dimensions: 7.88"x 5"x 1.62" Book 3: Title page present in this book dated 1775 and much of the publishing information. Page edges and internals are heavily toned. Library of 'The Union' Bookplate is present on the inside front panel. Scuffing to the panels and shelfwear to the edges and rounded corners. The spine is in the best shape out of all three volumes but has much of the same creasing and cracking. Binding and hinges are in good shape though the front hinge is cracked. Evidence of long evicted previous bookworm residents in the book itself. Starts with where vol 2 left off and ends with "end of the third volume".
