Beautifully bound in contemporary full straight grain morocco; smooth spines gilt; gilt ruled frames to boards; marbled pages edges and endpapers; portrait frontispieces with tissue guard; volume 1 depicting John Knox, engraved by J. Beugo from a picture loaned by Lord Torphenchin, volume 2 engraved by R.Scott; footnotes throughout; volume 1 with notes to rear; volume 2 with notes, appendix, supplement, and index to rear. Printed by Caw & Elder. Provenance: bookplate of Mr. John Tawse [Advocate] to front pastedown. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Bindings tight and secure, the hinges intact. Slight rubbing to extremities, particularly the points. Gilt a little rubbed in places. Contents nicely preserved, a little offsetting here and there.
