Description
This is a very nice 10 volume set of Matthew Arnold's works. Some scuffs, some some spotty endpapers; one endpaper with a small corner crease; worn spine ends... but few complaints with this lovely set of books. Please look at photos carefully, and I'll list each title with the flaws I notice. But in general--they're just great with strong bindings, unusually clear and bright pages, readable spines, terrific decorated inside covers and page edges, etc. Set has passed down in one family for 5 generations. Buyer will receive provenance information if desired. Volumes are not numbered. MacMillan later published a "Deluxe Edition" with 15 volumes; this set may not be complete, and although the volume on Celtic Literature & On the Translation of Homer seems complete, the words "Volume II" appear (please see photo). The following numbers are my own, just to clarify condition, flaws, etc. Note that "Discourses in America" was published in 1885--an anomaly in this set. 1. Poems; Volume 1. 1883; split at edge of front cover and spine; rough edges on foot and head of spine; some scuffs/scratches on the leather 2. Poems: Volume 2. 1883. some soiling and "bubbling" on final endpaper; minor scuffing 3. Discourses in America 1885; minor scuffing; wear at head and foot of spine; minor spots on early endpapers 4. Literature and Dogma: Essay on Better Interpretation of the Bible; 1883. Head and foot of spine are scuffed/bumped; corners show some wear 5. St. Paul and Protestantism; Church and Religion. 1883. Some creases on early endpapers; scuffing of covers & roughness at head and foot of spine; some underlining in pencil here and there. 6. Culture and Anarchy; Friendship's Garland. 1883. Some wrinkling on early pages; scuffs; minor spine edge rubbing/wear 7. God and the Bible 1883 Some wrinkling and soiling on early endpapers; usual scuffing and wear to exterior; rubbing affects title on spine; 8. Miscellaneous Essays; 1883; title etiquette damaged; wear at head and foot of spine 9. Essays in Critiscism; 1883. Split at top of spine/front board; scuffing 10. Celtic Literature & Translating Homer 1883; frayed leather at head and foot of spine; scuffing; this is the volume that reads "Volume II after the title page, which doesn't indicate that the volume is incomplete. kevindaleybooks-t Note: I try to identify any flaws in books as much as possible. Sometimes a photo will catch something that I hadn't noticed when making the listing--so it's good practice to look at the photographs as well as to read the listing. I want buyers to be pleased with what they buy! Thanks for looking
