We are pleased to offer this twenty-volume set. These volumes make an outstanding shelf display with their large size and gilt-embossed calf leather bindings, with 5 raised bands on the spines. This is a limited-edition printing by Houghton Mifflin, published in 1905. Each book is hand-numbered 187 of 600 printed. The set includes: The Odyssey of Homer, Volumes I-IV, translated to English by William Cullen Bryant The Iliad of Homer, Volumes I-IV, translated to English by William Cullen Bryant and illustrated by Flaxman The Einid of Virgil, Volumes I-II The Divine Comedy by Dante, Volumes I-VI, translated to English by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Faust, A Tragedy by Goethe, Volumes I-IV, translated by Bayard Taylor Each volume has a double frontispiece, one illustrated in color followed by a black/white of the same, and each with intact tissue separators. There are multiple other B/W illustrations in each volume. Illustrations are by Flaxman and others. Frontispieces include Ulysses & Rausica, Circe, Return of Ulysses, Ulysses & Telemachus, Homer, Helen & Paris, Automodon and the Horses of Achilles, Assembly of the Gods, Aeneus & Dido, Dante Affrighted by the Three Beasts, Dante's Dream, Beata Beatrix, Marguerite Leaving Church, Faust & Helena, etc. The volumes are in good to very good condition for age. The half-leather covers are beautiful, with only light fading/discoloration. There is excellent retention of the gilt embossed spine titles and little wear. These are original covers, marbled boards and endpapers in nice condition. The bindings are secure and tight. All joints and hinges are intact. The pages are gilt edged on top and all pages are present and bound. The pages are good, with little reading wear. MOST pages are in very good condition but there are some light moisture stains on a few pages in 12 of the volumes. Examples are shown. The other books are clean. There is no odor. There is no handwriting in the books, no page tears, and no dog ears. Original page ribbons are present. Each bo ok measures about 10 inches tall. The set takes 30 inches of shelf space. The set weighs about 75 pounds. We will ship in multiple boxes, so they be more easily carried. *Option to pick up in-person.
