Description

This is a set of two antique books containing 4 books written by the American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). They were published in 1902, and are brown boards with leather spines. Both are illustrated and both are in excellent condition. Condition of the covers are shown. The first book contains The Marble Faun: Or The Romance of Monte Beni , Hawthorne's last romance (set in Italy), which was published in 1860. 216 pages. There is a mark, either from water or glue, on the front endpaper. Otherwise perfect. The second book contains Fanshawe, Grandfather's Chair and Biographical Stories , as well as a short biography of Hawthorne written by Katharine Lee Bates (known for writing America the Beautiful ), who also wrote the introduction in both books. Fanshawe was Hawthorne's first novel. He published it anonymously in 1828 and paid for the printing. It is about his experiences at university. The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair Or, True Stories from New England History, 1620-1808, aka Grandfather's Chair, A History for Youth. This is a book published in 1840. It is a history of Colonial and post- Revolutionary War America written especially for young people. Hawthorne uses a sturdy oak chair, which appears in each of the stories, as a way to make more entertaining the early history of America. He includes Plymouth and the Pilgrims, the founding of Rhode Island, the Salem witch hysteria, Cotton Mather, the Liberty Tree, the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Continental Congress, and the Declaration of Independence. That is followed by Biographical Stories, in which Hawthorne writes about Benjamin West, Sir Isaac Newton, Samuel Johnson, Oliver Cromwell, Benjamin Franklin and Queen Christina. This second volume is 244 pages. Aside from a minor abrasion to the inside back cover, it is in perfect condition.
