Bancroft & Company, Publishers, San Francisco, CA Illustrated: Lightly illustrated Contents: Obscure and often morbid subject matter dealing with everything from stuffing of ballot boxes to the detailed descriptions of the hanging of many by the Committees of Vigilance as they took place in the western part of North America. Areas included are California, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Arizona, New Mexico and even Mexico. Here is an incident which took place in Montana. "Two miners at German Gulch, J.L. Goones and Hugh Dowd, lived together all winter, working by day and sleeping at night. All went well until one day in April 1866 the two men drank and disputed. Goones stabbed Dowd, and the people hanged Goones, though Dowd was not then dead." One page is entitled, "Pet names for hanging". "Necktie sociable" and "Strangulation jig" were a couple of euphonious names the people of Montana had for this occasion. One account describes a hanging attended by 5,000 people! He was quite the Big Game Fisherman, many trips from Balboa, CA, to Catalina... searching for Marlin, and Broadbill Swordfish, most every week in the season, aboard his lovely boat EDNA. He caught a Swordfish 256 lbs, Sept.12,1935! 3 hrs, 45min time!
