Not sure of the correct terminology . It has the word "proof" on it and there is an identical one in the British Museum (see pictures). Harvard University has a 1840 edition donated by Carl T. Keller (Cervantes scholar) in 1894 which is the same 3 volumes but slightly different binding. In their volumes, there are no insertions. The publisher, Joseph Thomas seemed to do high end publishing in the 1840's. *****Volume 1 has both boards detached. Approx.1st 10 pages are detached together in volume 1 as well. Pages and boards fit nicely with the book for repair/rebound purposes. Otherwise the volumes are in good condition for the age (1840) with the usual issues associated with books of that age. There is very light toning; no writing, very clean. Please see pictures for additional information and detail. T here are no remainder marks, not ex-library.
