Each volume is a limited edition of one-thousand copies, with each volume in this set numbered ninety-five, lavishly illustrated throughout, including frontispieces, plates, and in-text photographs and illustrations. 'British Sports and Sportsmen' was a commanding series, containing many volumes on a wide variety of sporting subjects. Each volume was an extensive and vivid study into sport, and were popular library acquisitions of the day. This set includes: 'Sportsmen Past and Present', in two volumes, dated 1908 - 1913. Volume I illustrated with one-hundred and fifteen plates, Volume II with one-hundred and fourteen. Collated, complete. CONDITION In the original publisher's full morocco binding. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to the spines and extremities. Spines are a little faded. Only a few small marks to the boards. Loss to the head of the spine both volumes of 'Sportsmen Past and Present'. A small amount of loss to the front board of 'Breeding and Agriculture'. Loss to the fore edge of 'Athletic Sports'. Lifting to the tail of the spine of 'Hunting', with a small worm hole to the front joint. 'Hunting' with heavy wear to the bottom edge, with loss, resulting in tears and creasing to the text. Dampstain to the front board of 'Golf'. Internally, firmly bound; binding of 'Racing' is tender in places, weak and almost failed between pages 400 and 40, and 236 and 237. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots. 'Racing' is tide marked to the textblock, with loss of paper and discolouration to the front paste down and endpaper, rear endpaper is adhered to the rear paste down with heavy discolouration; loss to pages and heavy discolouration to the textblock, some pages are adhered to one another Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it.
