I will be listing some more Select and Rare Old and Vintage Books this week. ___________________________________________ Here is an 1836 COMPLETE 2-VOLUME LEATHER BOUND SET OF "THE KORAN, COMMONLY CALLED THE ALCORAN OF MOHAMMED..." compiled by GEORGE SALE. London: Printed for Longman, Rees & Co....1836 . Books are 8-3/4" x 5-1/2". Complete texts with illustration plates. This set has the wonderful 19thc bookplate of Boston inventor and politician ISAAC ADAMS (1802-1883) in the front of each volume. Also has the signature of Isaac Adams at top of front blank in Vol.1. Adams was the inventor of the Adams Power Press (1830) which revolutionized the printing industry. Beginning in 1836 (curiously, the year of this book set) it became the leading machine used in book printing for much of the 19thC and was distributed worldwide. Adams was also a Massachusetts Senator in 1840. The Adams bookplate was engraved by Henry Mitchell in 1877 (see close-up photo). V1 has the nice c.Early-20thC San Francisco importer and bookseller label of John Howell on rear marbled end paper. He was an importer and seller of fine and rare books in San Francisco. Condition: The exterior leather with fading to brown on spines and other wear to covers. A 2" long split line to leather at top of spine-front cover edge with this front cover beginning to come loose but still attached. The bindings and texts are still together well. Interior pages are mostly nice and clean with exception of a few with light spotting. Old dealer or estate sale price in pencil in top corners of front blank page of each volume and some other vintage dealer code notation in mostly erased pencil in front of V1 near the Isaac Adams signature.
