Uniform full leather bindings measure 9 x 5.5", 8vos. In fair condition. Vol. I's front board previously restored (re-attached professionally). Boards are normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Heads and tails of spines scuffed; tail of Vol. I cracked, but intact. Title and volume labels all intact; gilt lettering and deco normally dulled, but legible and attractive. Some hinges are beginning to crack at heads and tails of spines. Modern ink ownership signatures on all front paste-downs. Light off-setting on Vol. I's title page from frontispiece. Normal to light toning throughout text-blocks. Bindings remain intact. Please see photos. Alexander Pope (1688-1744) is rewarded as one of the greatest English poets, and the foremost poet of the early eighteenth century. He is best known for his satirical and discursive poetry, including The Rape of The Lock, The Dunciad and An Essay on Criticism, as well as his translation of Homer. After William Shakespeare, Pope is the second-most quoted writer in the English language, as per the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. He is considered a master of the heroic couplet.
