Description

The Poetical Works of James Montgomery. Including Several Poems Now First Collected; with A Sketch of His Life, Complete in Three Volumes, Published by Leonard C. Bowles, Boston, 1821, three frontispieces and decorative titles, marbled leather bindings, 5.75 x 4”, 32mo. In good condition. Front board of volume three detached. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing to corners, joints and end bands. A few mild scratch marks to surface of boards, but overall soft and rich in color. Decorative gilt tooling remains bright and clean. Spines exhibit minor loss at heads and tails, remain attractive despite this. Bookplate of Aaron O. Shuff on front pastedown of volume one serial No. 286. Some dampness staining in the beginning signature of volume one. Light offsetting from plates, tissue guards intact. Interiors good with minor toning. Free of too much foxing. Free of known marginalia. Miss Eliza Biskham Presented by Miss Maria Percival 21, Oct. 1824 on old hand manuscript on title pages. Bindings tight and intact. Irregular bleached staining to fore-edges. Please see photos. A distinguished edition of Montgomery, a poet of great interest to Americanists and historians of abolition. The early owner of this set, Aaron O. Shuff, ran the Steamboat Hotel near the wharf in Bloomsbury (South Trenton), on the Delaware River in the early 1820's, and beyond. Even with its defects, this is a handsome little set. COLL1831BDEN

Just picked up my package from Robin Rare Books and let me start by saying WOW!!! Book as advertised for sure. the value of the book certainly dictated some care in shipping but never did I think to this extent. The packaging was incredible. bigger box than needed at first thought but after opening based on the care and multiple layers of packing It would have survived a Tank rolling over it. Very grateful for you listing and working with me on the book, true piece of history I will cherish

I recently discovered Folio Society books and purchased a number of them from this site to add to my library of Easton Press books. I had a positive experience with each seller. They carefully wrapped the books in packing material to prevent damage during shipping. The books arrived in the condition described. I am looking forward to reading each and every one. I recommend them all.
