Handsome bookplates of John Chipman Gray on pastedowns. Interiors are remarkably well preserved. Minor toning and foxing throughout. Quite bright considering these volumes are 330 years old. Bindings tight and intact. Occasional old hand marginalia in quill on a few leaves. Free of modern markings. A very sound and unspoiled set. Please see photos. Important classics work of Johann Georg Graevius (1632-1703). Graevius was a German scholar and critic. Graevius “enjoyed a very high reputation as a teacher, and his lecture-room was crowded with pupils, many of them of distinguished rank, from all parts of the world. He was visited by Lorenzo Magalotti and honored with special recognition by Louis XIV, and was a particular favorite of William III of England, who made him historiographer royal.” This work of Cicero is considered one of his best works. Provenance of John Chipman Gray (1839-1915) who was an American scholar of property law and professors at Harvard Law School. He founded the law firm Ropes & Gray, with law partner John Codman Ropes. He was half-brother to U.S. Supreme Court associate justice Horace Gray, and a grandson of merchant and politician William Gray. He was an abolitionist and “argued that the defeat of slavery was imperative for the survival of a nation.” RAREE1693JRSX

Just picked up my package from Robin Rare Books and let me start by saying WOW!!! Book as advertised for sure. the value of the book certainly dictated some care in shipping but never did I think to this extent. The packaging was incredible. bigger box than needed at first thought but after opening based on the care and multiple layers of packing It would have survived a Tank rolling over it. Very grateful for you listing and working with me on the book, true piece of history I will cherish

Everything about this purchase exceeded my expectations. The book was as described and my offer was accepted, which is of great value to me. The book was lovingly packed with many layers and protection, which this older book deserved. The cherry on the top was I received the book days before expected. Great seller, highly recommend.
